The ex-Soviet, Romanian-speaking Republic of Moldova, a country with 2.4 million people in last Sunday’s crucial ballot voted to stay close to the European Union – The Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) founded by President Maia Sandu emerged as winner of the Parliamentary election on Sunday. According to the returns announced by Chisinau, PAS won the election after having mustered more than half of the votes and has also achieved Parliament majority.

The Patriotic Block, made up of pro-Russia parties, came second at a big distance, followed by the Alternativa Election Block of Chisinau’s mayor, Ion Ceban, whose entrance to the territory of Romania and the EU has been banned. Parliament seats have also been won by Our Party, a political group of the controversial mayor of the Balti city, Renato Usatîi and the Home Democracy Party, which obtained a surprising result in the election, being propelled to Parliament by a TikTok campaign.

The pro-European victory came at the end of a campaign, during which both the authorities and the press had denounced the massive interferences from the Russian Federation aimed at influencing the voting process. However, Moscow denies any involvement in the Moldovan election. Turnout in the Sunday election stood at over 52%, lower than in the last year’s presidential election, but comparable with the 2021 ballot. Out of the 1.6 million, who voted on Sunday, over 275 thousand cast their ballot abroad, which accounted for 16% of the total number of votes.

Romania made available 23 polling stations, and the Moldovan citizens who voted here said they wanted a better future for their country. They hope that after the recent election, the Republic of Moldova will irreversibly go towards Europe.

Presidential adviser, Radu Burnete, on Monday conveyed a message from Bucharest, in which he said that in spite of the war and propaganda, Eastern Europe will prove to Russia that a historical cycle ended in 1989 and definitive steps have been taken to the West, and that Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova will be part of this space too.

In turn, Romanian Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, has conveyed a congratulation message to the Moldovan voters for the ‘exemplary way’ in which they staged the voting adding the place of the Republic of Moldova is ‘in the big European family’.

“The victory of the Pro-European forces in the Republic of Moldova is a strong signal for the EU accession,” the PSD MP and vice-president of the European Parliament, Victor Negrescu said. According to him, Europe and Romania are winning and the Republic of Moldova is getting towards a common future with the EU. Siegfried Muresan, Chair of the Delegation to the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, believes the pro-European victory in the Parliamentary election will step up the process of the Republic of Moldova’s EU accession.”
