Statistics from Romania show that people go to the theater at least once a year, and the good news is that young people seem to go even more often. On the other hand, if we talk to those who want to see a specific show, it seems that for famous performances, you might have to buy tickets many months in advance. Without proposing to make an analysis of the phenomenon, we can say that there is demand, but also the need, perhaps, for a different approach.

And here comes the offer of the newly founded Theater Club. Because they have already passed through the first two editions, we spoke with the initiator of the Club, Răzvan Roxin, who is an actor and event creator, to find out more:

“I set out to make this project, which has already had two editions, a broader experience than what going to the theater usually means. In the sense that we wanted to have, theater, plus a theater culture, plus socializing, plus relaxation, a redefinition of the classic theater experience. The concept is a theater show that is assembled into a larger event. At the beginning of each show, I, or the director, or a representative of the theater, one of us offers a brief introduction to that event. I tell a little about what the club means, about the show that will be presented, the text, the author, the main theme of the show, the actors who will perform that evening. I ask the audience if they have been to the theater before, if they have seen similar shows, if they have seen the actors in other shows or films, or if they know them. A connection is created between me or the presenter and the spectators, who are part of the same event, meaning there is no sense of a break between what is on stage and what is in the hall. It is an interaction that helps to create a relaxation, an introduction into the world of theater.”

They set out to create an event once a month and redefine the experience of the theater show. Răzvan Roxin:

“We want to stage one show per month in the Theater Club area, which will be a group of a few hundred people with whom we will discuss; and we will also go to the Corporate area with this idea afterwards, that is, we’ll organize a kind of cultural teambuilding. Anyway, the event does not end after the show, at the end, we have an autograph session with the actors, photos with the actors, with the show’s setting and also a glass of Prosecco and discussions about the event. It’s an immense joy to have such good feedback at the end of the event and people asking me to put their name on the list for the next one. It’s a very relaxed event and people feel at ease and the fact that you can talk about the actors and about the show after the performance and tell them if that you liked it is an extraordinary thing.”

The programme has been evolving from one edition to the next and they’re already thinking of staging similar events for children. Răzvan Roxin explains:

“We’ll also be doing shows for children, with explanations about the show and the world of theatre, except that instead of a glass of sparkling wine we’ll have a glass of fruit juice. I’m sure children will enjoy taking photos with the actors and with the puppets and marionettes that featured in the performance.”

The concept created by Răzvan Roxin also enjoyed the contribution of George Constantinescu, the founder of the Art Theatre, who liked the idea and hosted the event at the theatre he runs. Constantinescu, who is an actor himself, opened an independent theatre precisely because he wanted to choose his own roles. The project also benefits from the support of Pamela Bojoc Pricopie, from the Romanian Theatre Union UNITER, who contributed to structuring the concept, as our interlocutor put it. As for what’s in store in November, he said it’s a surprise. Răzvan Roxin:

“We’re thinking of doing two shows, one of which I understand was staged for the last time at the Art Theatre, so I’d like to stage it once more for those who haven’t seen it and make a nice event out of its last showing. All this will be on Facebook on the theatre club page and on Instagram.”

The theatre club is slowly but surely growing in number. The idea of the spectators’ interaction with the actors and the whole team behind a performance in a friendly atmosphere is sure to be a success.
