Catinca Tăbăcaru’s story begins with the discipline of international law and evolves into the freedom of contemporary art. Her journey is not just professional, but deeply personal — an inner transformation that turned her pursuit of justice into a mission of creativity and cultural dialogue. After earning degrees at UC Berkeley and Duke University, she worked at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and Guantanamo Bay before founding Women’s Voices Now, a non-profit organisation amplifying women’s voices through film.
In 2014 she opened the Catinca Tabacaru Gallery in New York, later expanding to Harare, Zimbabwe, where she built strong collaborations with local artists. Today, she also runs her own gallery in Bucharest, continuing her mission to connect Romanian art with global audiences.
She is also known as the co-founder of RAD Art Fair, Romania’s first major contemporary art fair, and the Doi Joi project, an innovative platform for artistic dialogue and experimentation.
In 2025, her Bucharest gallery launched a landmark project highlighting Romania’s overlooked role in supporting Zimbabwe’s independence struggle. The exhibition, “Have No Doubt of the Omnipotence of a Free People”, explores solidarity between the two nations and features both Romanian and Zimbabwean artists.
