Romanian President Nicușor Dan paid a two-day visit to France, where he was received with military honors by his counterpart, Emmanuel Macron. “We have a long history and we have a very steady future,” President Dan said on Tuesday, in a press conference, after meeting with the French President, adding that the talks during his working visit were very cordial. The two presidents discussed how French companies can contribute to the major investments that Romania is preparing in the defense industry. Nicuşor Dan explained that, in the face of current security challenges, there is a strong European force, capable of mobilizing at any time to defend Romania. He did not rule out the possibility of supplementing the French military presence in Romania in the future, but, for now, no decision has been made in this regard.

According to President Dan, in terms of equipping the Romanian Army, there is the option of purchasing weapons and equipment produced on our continent through the joint European SAFE program. “We want the procurement made under the SAFE program to be produced in Europe, and as much as possible located in Romania. There are discussions, negotiations between the Ministry of Defense and the interested companies”, said Nicușor Dan.

“We have worked a lot together, in recent months, for the bilateral relationship, for our Europe, for Ukraine”, said, in turn, French President Emmanuel Macron, who accepted the invitation of his Romanian counterpart to visit Romania next year. The two heads of state also discussed the economy, and the leader from the Élysée stressed that French investments in Romania are long-term strategic investments and not speculative ones. In fact, President Nicușor Dan had, on Tuesday, talks with representatives of French economic companies, organized by the French Enterprise Movement. On the other hand, he met with the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, with whom he attended the inauguration of the “Nicolae Titulescu” Alley in the Monceau Park in Paris, in memory of the great Romanian diplomat, a moment that marked the 145 years of Romanian-French diplomatic ties. The two discussed the numerous cooperation projects in the fields of economy, education, but also on topics related to the Romanian community in the French capital, as stated by Nicușor Dan. “Bucharest and Paris are associated through numerous cultural and historical ties, through architecture and art. Today, we want to orient our cooperation towards the future, through economy, education and advanced technologies, in order to find solutions to the development challenges of large cities”, Nicușor Dan said.

On Monday, on the first evening of his visit, the Romanian President met, at the Romanian Embassy in Paris, with Romanians living in France. (EE)
