Romania is active in energy production, but one of its problems is the lack of storage facilities. As experts say, with the increasing need for advanced grid flexibility solutions, battery energy storage systems play a vital role in balancing supply and demand and strengthening the country’s energy security. In this respect, Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan announced that, in Cluj county (northwest), the largest battery energy storage capacity in Romania has been rendered operational – 200 megawatts of power. Storage is one of the most effective solutions to keep costs in check for Romanians, says Bogdan Ivan. Also, in his opinion, this method can reduce imbalances in the system and better integrate the energy produced by prosumers. In a post on his Facebook page, the minister emphasized that this is clean and cheap energy, which is being stored to be used when it is most needed. He claims that the Nova Power & Gas investment was completed in just six months, a very short time for a project of such magnitude. “Local investors have invested in storage because this is the key to balanced and advantageous prices,” said Bogdan Ivan.

A recently published survey shows that almost half of Romanians, over 46.%, would invest in batteries for storing green energy, if they received state subsidies, while 9% do not know what the advantages of storage systems are. According to the research, over 60% of respondents say that the cost of storage systems is the main obstacle in the decision to buy and install one, although the overwhelming number of those interested say that storing green energy is very important. “For owners of photovoltaic panel systems, batteries are essential because they balance variable production – they store surplus energy during the day and offer it in the evening or at night – increase self-consumption and reduce the bill, ensure independence and safety, support the electricity grid – reduce surges and help stabilize the system – and prepare the energy future – allow participation in flexibility markets and smart energy services, the authors of the study pointed out.

Almost 9% of respondents say that they have no information about the importance and advantages of installing an electricity storage system with batteries, and more than 24% say that they do not have adequate space for installation. The estimated budget for a complete system, consisting in photovoltaic panels and batteries, is under 5,000 euros for 41% of the study participants, while 37% calculated a budget between 5,000 and 10,000 euros.
