Romania’s representative at the Figure Skating European Championship in Sheffield, Julia Sauter, came 11th in the final ranking. After a lackluster show in the short program, the Romanian athlete of German extraction managed a better show in the free-style programme, where she came sixth. Sauter’s best performance was at the European Championships last year, where she came 7th. She will be the only athlete to represent Romania in the skating contests of the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy.
Romania already has one representative in the second round of the Australian Open. On Sunday, in the first round, Gabriela Ruse managed to clinch a two setter win 6-4, 7-5, against Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine. The Romanian has been awarded 225 thousand Australian dollars and 70 WTA points. On Monday, the Czech athlete Karolina Muchova secured a two-setter, 6-3, 7-6, against Jacqueline Cristian of Romania. Also in the first round, Sorana Cîrstea will be up against Eva Lys of Germany on Tuesday.
At the European Handball Championships in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, Romania lost the first two matches in Group B. Our handballers lost to Portugal on Friday, 40-34, and were outperformed on Sunday by Denmark, 39–24. Romania will be taking on North Macedonia on Tuesday but only the first two sides in the group’s ranking are to qualify for the competition’s next stage.
Last weekend saw a new leg of the European competitions in women’s handball. In the Champions League’s Group A, Gloria Bistrita was defeated by Esbjerg in Denmark 32-28 and dropped to the fourth place in the group’s ranking. CSM Bucharest ranks fourth in Group B after a 26-20 home win against Krim Ljubljana on Sunday. In the EHF European League, on Saturday, Minaur Baia Mare secured a 34-28 win against the Hungarian side Mosonmagyaróvár and is presently topping the Group A. Also on Saturday in Group C, Rapid Bucharest ended their away game against Lokomotiva Zagreb in a draw 28-all. In Group D, Corona Brașov won their match in Poland against local side, Zaglebie Lubin, 39 – 31, and is presently ranking third in the group. Last weekend saw the matches of the 22nd leg of Romania’s first football league.
On Friday in Mioveni, local side FC Arges obtained a 1-0 win against FCSB, while on Saturday, UTA outperformed Unirea Slobozia 3-1. Then in Ovidiu, local side Farul Constanta ended in a draw one-all their match against Hermannstadt. In Bucharest local side Rapid outperformed Metaloglobus 1-0. In Miercurea Ciuc, central Romania, local side Csikszereda outperformed FC Botoșani, 1-0. In Cluj, western Romania, local side CFR defeated Oțelul Galați, 1-0. Another Bucharest side, Dinamo, managed to outperform Universitatea Cluj one-nil. The leg’s last game on Monday pitches Petrolul Ploiești against Universitatea Craiova. Rapid tops the ranking with 42 points followed by Dinamo with 41.
