As of Thursday Romania is being promoted in several capital cities around the world, in a tour of screenings and cultural events organised by the British writer and producer Charlie Ottley, jointly with the ministry of economy, digitisation, entrepreneurship and tourism and with support from the foreign ministry.

According to a news release issued by the economy ministry, the tour includes screenings of Ottley’s documentary “Flavours of Romania” in countries either geographically distant, such as Thailand, Malaysia, Chile, Peru or Colombia, or closer to Europe, such as the United Kingdom, followed by presentations and Q&A sessions. The tour, designed to showcase the beauty and diversity of Romania to an international audience made up of government members, influencers and travel agents, will hopefully help consolidate international relations and promote Romanian tourism.

Charlie Ottley believes that there are still too many misconceptions about Romania, and the only way to get past them is to go out into the world and show people that the country is, in fact, extraordinary.

The events are organised jointly with the Romanian embassies in the respective countries and include approximately 75-minute long screenings of selections from seasons 2 and 3 of “Flavours of Romania,” focusing on the nine historical regions of today’s Romania. The screenings and Q&A sessions will be followed by networking and gastronomic promotion opportunities.

Born in 1971, Charlie Ottley is a journalist, TV presenter, poet and filmmaker. He studied philosophy and theology and took journalism courses, a field in which he made his debut at the age of 25. Like his own sovereign, King Charles III, who has properties here and was a great promoter of the medieval heritage of Transylvania, Ottley has a long-standing love for Romania.

He rose to fame precisely by making travel documentaries about the country’s natural landscapes, such as “Wild Carpathia” (2011) and “Flavours of Romania” (2017). The documentaries, featuring then Prince Charles, among others, have been screened in 110 countries and translated into 11 languages. In 2017, Ottley presented episode 4 of “Wild Carpathia” to 193 state officials and 400 VIPs at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

In recognition of his efforts in promoting culture and tourism, five years ago the Romanian government awarded him the Order of Cultural Merit. In 2020 Ottley was made an honorary citizen of Brașov, the largest mountain city in Romania. He is married to a Romanian woman, Oana Mihai, who is also his teammate in the tours promoting Romania. The popular British journalist became a Romanian citizen last year. (AMP)
