Romania’s President, Nicuşor Dan, on Sunday announced his participation this week in the first proceedings of the Board of Peace in Washington in response to an invitation from the US President Donald Trump. “Romania will have the statute of observer and I will reiterate our staunch support for the international peace efforts and the readiness to participate in the reconstruction process of the Gaza Strip,” the Romanian President has said. According to him the decision is based upon the idea of supporting the diplomatic process endorsed through the UN Security Council resolution in November initiated by the USA. Romania has constantly supported the process aimed at identifying a solution to resolve the conflict and has granted support to the civilians in the Gaza Strip, mainly through medevac operations, President Dan recalled in a Facebook message. The Romanian president earlier said he held talks with the American side on the participation in the Board of Peace and what the observer statute entails.
The President underlined the idea that for Romania it is important to participate against the background of its traditional relations with Israel and the Arab countries. Donald Trump has announced the member countries of the so-called Board of Peace will earmark over 5 billion dollars to the ‘humanitarian and reconstruction efforts in Gaza’. According to the White House leader the official announcement regarding this contribution will be made during the first session of the organization to be hosted by the US Institute of Peace, recently renamed to also include the Republican President’s name. Trump has also mentioned the participants in his initiative have pledged the to participate in the International Stabilization Force and the local police to maintain the security and peace of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. “Very importantly, Hamas must uphold its commitment to full and immediate demilitarization. The Board of Peace will prove to be the most important International Body in History, and it is my honour to serve as its Chairman”, the US President went on to say.
Initially dedicated to settling the conflict in Gaza, the Board of Peace later received its charter in Davos, with an enlarged role to also address and promote solutions to other world conflicts. Most of the members are Trump’s allies and many do not represent democracies. The big powers and almost all European countries have declined Trump’s invitation to participate considering the new mechanism is actually undermining the role of the United Nations, an organization, which Trump believes has proved its inefficiency and has become irrelevant. The European Commission will participate also as observer to its proceedings due on February 19.
