The United States and Israel have launched a coordinated attack on Iran. International media reports that several loud explosions were heard in Tehran and other cities around Iran. Iran had threatened that if attacked by the US, its response would target not only the US, but also Israel, with whom it waged a 12-day war last summer. The United States also intervened in the conflict at that time, bombing Iranian nuclear targets.
The US wants severe restrictions imposed on Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic programs, but the latest round of negotiations ended on Friday without the parties reaching an agreement. On Friday evening, US President Donald Trump said he was disappointed with the results of the talks, and today he has announced that the US military has joined the Israeli attacks and has begun “major combat operations in Iran” to eliminate “imminent threats from the Iranian regime.” He has vowed to destroy Tehran’s missile capabilities, its naval forces and insisted that “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon”.
“My brothers and sisters, citizens of Israel, a short time ago, Israel and the United States launched an operation to eliminate the existential threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said in a video message.
The Iranian leadership has responded with a stern warning to the attacks on its territory and has launched missiles against Israel. Air raid sirens sounded in several parts of the country in the morning, and the Israeli military urged the population to be prepared and take shelter.
