The Romanian Cup in football this year is held according to a new format. The event begins with the regional stage, followed by three rounds which include the lower-echelon teams. The Cup's ensuing playoff stage will also include eight of the Superleague's poorer-ranked teams. The competition's next group stage will also include the other eight stronger teams of the upper echelon. There are 24 teams all told, distributed according to six groups made of six teams each. So, there is no such thing as the round-robin system. The teams play only three fixtures, according to a value ranking system. The first two teams in descending order advance to the quarterfinals. Then the semi-final and the final follow.
