December 1 is the day that unites us, the day with the most hugs and the most frequent wishes of “Many happy returns!” It is the day that reminds us that we have overcome the obstacles of time. Romania’s National Day represents the culmination of an ancient creed of unity and freedom; it is the definition of the bond that unites the Romanian people. December 1 is the heart that beats in the chest of Romanians.

This year, on December 1, Romanian soldiers, together with those from France, North Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the US, as well as from allied countries contributing to NATO structures on Romanian territory, presented honours at the National Military Parade. Every soldier, Romanian or foreign, was proud to have had the opportunity to march under the Arch of Triumph in Bucharest.

“I feel proud and honoured. It is a wonderful moment to march alongside our Romanian allies on such an important day for them. Our cooperation is also growing stronger. We have the great opportunity and privilege to represent our country even when we are far away from it. The applause shows me that people appreciate our service and dedication,” said Corporal Nowak, one of the representatives of the 18th Polish detachment deployed in Romania.

The parade of Romanian soldiers alongside their NATO partners is not a show of bravado; it is a demonstration of strength and professionalism. On each nation’s national day, attention is focused on those in the defence and security system, who are always on duty. “Participating in the National Day parade and hearing the applause of the public is always a deeply moving moment. The recognition from the people we serve gives meaning to our profession and reinforces the reason why we wear the uniform. It is not about individual pride, but about representing Portugal with dignity and honour. The applause reminds us that our sacrifice is valued and that the connection with the public strengthens our duty and motivation to serve, whether at home or on missions abroad,” said the deputy company commander of the Portuguese detachment.

“The fact that you are applauded and appreciated by so many people makes you want to be better and give your all. There is no greater pride than marching for your country on its national day and, at the same time, being watched by your family and friends,” the commanding non-commissioned officer of the 22nd Infantry Battalion “Romanați,” Senior Warrant Officer Iulian Caliu, told the youngest soldiers.

The public’s reaction gives the soldiers confidence in their own forces, whether they are Romanian or NATO partners. “I am very excited and motivated. This moment shows that we are true partners, marching side by side proves that we can rely on each other. In a multinational environment, you can feel even more how important your own traditions are and how much unity means. I feel excited and motivated. The energy of the crowd gives strength and shows that what we do really matters,” said Maria, a medical staff member in the Polish contingent.

December 1 is an emotionally charged moment, a day of gratitude for the past, for national values, a moment when every Romanian feels at home wherever they may be. Unity in thought and feeling and national dignity are the values that unite us, bring us together, and urge us toward solidarity and unity. (MI)
