Several airlines have launched or increased the number of flights from Romania. Lufthansa Group increased capacity by approximately 50% on the Sibiu – Vienna route in May at Sibiu International Airport (central Romania). Austrian Airlines’ operating capacity on the Sibiu – Vienna – Sibiu route was expanded by increasing frequencies from 5 to 7 flights per week, and using Airbus A320 aircraft, with a capacity of 180 seats. The 27 aircraft operated by Lufthansa CityLine were permanently withdrawn from the flight schedule, in order to limit the company’s losses, mainly after the doubling of the price of kerosene. The decision also affected the Munich-Sibiu connection, operated by Lufthansa CityLine 17 times a week.

Low-cost carrier Wizz Air has introduced or will introduce three new destinations in Romania, namely Antalya and Pescara from Bucharest (operational from April 1), and Valletta from Cluj-Napoca, starting May 22. The flights will be operated twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. Flights to Pescara are operated on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. There are 2-3 flights per week to Antalya. Wizz is also launching four new routes from Romania for the 2026 summer season, expanding its network of connections from Timisoara (west) and Craiova (south). Thus, the company will inaugurate, on May 21, two routes from Timisoara to Berlin and Birmingham respectively, operated on Thursdays and Sundays. Starting May 23, Wizz Air will introduce an additional route between Timisoara and Prague, with flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays, as well as a route from Craiova to Venice, operated on the same days. In addition, a new route will also support operations from the Republic of Moldova, through a direct connection from Chisinau to Stuttgart, starting on May 31, with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Wizz Air is also launching two new routes from Iași International Airport (northeast), Milan Malpensa and Pisa. Flights to Milan Malpensa will start on 20 May, on Wednesdays and Sundays. The second destination, Pisa, will be available from 23 May, with flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays. In addition, four routes have been added from the capital of the Republic of Moldova, with new direct connections from Chisinau to Cologne and Basel Mulhouse (France) in May, and Rhodes (Greece) and Rimini (Italy) in June. Starting on 22 May, Wizz Air will expand its offer with the launch of a connection to Malta, from Cluj-Napoca, on Mondays and Fridays. On 23 May, the local network from Cluj-Napoca will be strengthened with the introduction of new flights to Dubrovnik, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

In this context, we remind you that the air operator Turkish Airlines has doubled the number of Cluj-Napoca – Istanbul flights, from 7 to 14 per week, from March 29, 2026. From Monday to Sunday, two daily flights are operated from Cluj to Istanbul, one in the morning and one in the evening, offering even more flexibility for passengers. In fact, the ‘Avram Iancu’ Cluj-Napoca International Airport announced on April 29 that it had again reached one million passengers, a performance recorded 16 days earlier than in 2025.
