Situated in heart of Bukovina, the area known as Dorna Country should be a destination for everyone, no matter what your preferences are. You can do all sorts of tourism, such as active and balneary, ecotourism, and cultural. The ecotourism association of Dorna Country invites us, especially during this period, to discover the area and the hosts that have prepared hard to receive us for a safe vacation. Cazimirciuc Maricica is the manager of the Ecotourism Association of Dorna Country, one of the four ecotourism destinations in Romania which are officially recognized:

“The specificity of the destination is granted by the natural framework of the depression between the mountains, within the Eastern Carpathians, mostly in the southeast of the county of Suceava. The city of Vatra Dornei with the villages surrounding it, and the massifs of Suhard, Giumalau, Bistrita, and Calimani constitutte this area. It is hard to put in only a few words what is most beautiful or best to offer here. I would start from an article published in September 1925 called A Trip to Vatra Dornei 45 years ago. It said: back then, in Dorna, nature was in all its splendor. It had clean air, mineral water, and a patriarchal life that rested you and you got back home so refreshed that you felt like toppling a mountain. 150 years later, the beauty of the place, the hospitable and kind people, who hold on to a place of life that is purely traditional, the mineral waters with curative properties, the traditions and crafts passed down for generations, these are all part of our destination, making it among the top of the preferences of visitors. They come here for knowledge, rest, treatment, relaxation in the bosom of nature, and outdoors activities.”

Vatra Dornei is known as the Pearl of Bukovina. It is at an altitude of 800 m, and is famous among the lovers of mountain sports, and among the people who just want to spend a vacation in an oasis of tranquility. Many winter sports are available here, and you can take a stroll in the resort park, breathing in the highly ionized air. The mineral waters here are recommended for all sorts of conditions, for the nervous system, for locomotion system, and for cardiovasculary conditions. The entire area is teeming with activities. Here is Cazimirciuc Maricica of the Ecotourism Association of Dorna Country:

“Here you can expect to see endless forests, high peaks to climb, protected areas, and thematic trails, hundreds of km of bicycle trails, and many other outdoors activities. You can go easy rafting and kayaking, horse riding, rock climbing, Nordic walking, and zip-lining. During the winter we recommend alpine skiing, skating, snowtubing, and ice climbing. Not to be missed is a ride in a horse drawn sleigh. You are kindly awaited by hospitable hosts, with traditional preparations as only they know how to make. Now that the cold season is very close, we are relying on having snow to offer us the possibilities of relaxation and health that winter sports grant. We hope that the restrictions imposed by the pandemic will allow the tourists to enjoy winter traditions here. They are truly spectacular, both culturally and gastronomically. Each year, the hosts in Dorna Country eagerly await their guests with warm rooms, a full table, Christmas carols, and happy singing.”

The aim of the Ecotourism Association of Dorna Country is the economic development of this destination through ecotourism, as we were told by Cazimirciuc Maricica:

“We aim to launch ecotourism packages and programs, which are to include a variety of activities outdoors, gastronomic experiences, visits and treks to the most beautiful areas, most with assistance from local guides. These packages may be personalized depending on preferences, such as age, budget, fitness, or food preferences. Our target is the widest range of tourists: couples, groups of young people, but also seniors and families with children. One example in winter is observing nature on skis in the Calimani Natural Park. It is a package for young people, who have the possibility of going out on skis, with the possibility of seeing wild animal tracks, skiing on virgin snow, or meet birds such as owls and mountain roosters. In fact, all the programs we have here are aimed at experiencing nature in the open air, and at interacting with the people here, experiencing their traditions.”

The promotion of the tourist potential of the area is also a major aim in the activity of the Ecotourism Association of Dorna Country, with national and international fairs, with websites that are easily accessible from across the world.
