Government. Romanian Prime Minister-designate Eugen Tomac has so far failed to convince any party to give him clear and unconditional support. He has called on political parties to move beyond their current reticence and remain open to dialogue in order to resolve the current political crisis. Eugen Tomac has met today with the UDMR to discuss support for the technocratic government he will propose to Parliament, following consultations on Monday with the major parties of the former governing coalition: the PSD, PNL, and USR. This afternoon, he will meet in Parliament with the national minorities group, as well as with the populist senators and deputies from United for Romania and PACE, respectively. The best solution is to have a government sworn in quickly, capable of addressing some of Romania’s urgent problems, because time is of the essence, says the prime minister-designate, who noted that Romania’s commitments under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan fall under the category of urgent matters.
Economy The National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis (CNSP) estimates that economic growth will decline in 2026, from 1% in the previous forecast to 0.1%, due to current macroeconomic conditions. For 2027, Romania’s National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis estimates an economic growth of 2.2%. The recovery in 2027 will be supported by lower inflation and more favorable financing conditions, according to the forecast. Growth will continue in the coming years, reaching 2.4% in 2028 and 2.1% in 2029. For 2026, other international financial institutions have also issued pessimistic economic forecasts.
Protest. In Romania, the SANITAS Federation launched today a work-to-rule strike in hospitals and social care facilities, with employees wearing armbands. Union members are sending a warning to the authorities and say they may resort to a general strike if their demands regarding pay and staff rights continue to be ignored. Sanitas representatives state that they wish to find solutions through dialogue and avoid escalating the social conflict, as they are dissatisfied with the new pay law. The Sanitas Federation is one of the largest trade union organizations in the health and social care sector in Romania, representing employees in hospitals, medical facilities, and social care institutions across the country.
Airport. The world’s largest independent airport slot coordinator, Airport Coordination Limited, will provide comprehensive coordination services at Bucharest’s Henri Coandă Airport starting with the 2026–2027 winter season – 2027, under a multi-year agreement set to take effect on October 25, the Bucharest National Airports Company has announced. The company signed the coordination agreement for Henri Coandă International Airport, under which landings and takeoffs will be planned and coordinated to optimize operational capacity. In practice, with the introduction of top-level coordination, flights will be scheduled through the allocation of slots (fixed landing and takeoff times), which will allow the actual capacity of the runways and terminals to be coordinated with the scheduled number of flights. In Europe, all major airports benefit from top-level coordination.
Batten. The main facade of the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest will be illuminated in turquoise tonight for two hours as part of an effort to raise awareness of Batten disease. Batten disease is a rare neurodegenerative disorder that affects children aged 2–4 and is characterized by a low life expectancy. According to data from the National Alliance for Rare Diseases in Romania, one million people in the country suffer from rare diseases, 75% of whom are children, and 9 out of 10 Romanians are either undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.
