Politics. President Nicușor Dan and parliamentary parties will hold fresh talks on September 1 to designate the next Prime Minister. The president believes that a majority for a stable government will be found this time. He explained that he did not make any further nominations in recent months because the successive failure of rejecting prime ministerial proposals would have harmed Romania’s economic image. This time, the president ruled out the option of a technocratic team, saying that the future cabinet will be composed mainly of ministers designated by the parliamentary parties. According to political sources, the future prime minister may be an independent leading a majority Social-Democratic government that will also be supported in Parliament by the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania.
EU funding. Romania is to finalise major projects funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan on the very last day of the deadline for the implementation of the plan. The opening of a new 47-km section of the A7 motorway, linking the capital Bucharest and the city of Bacău in the northeast, is scheduled for August 31. Horațiu Cosma, State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport, said in an online post that this milestone secures a 1.5 billion euro tranche of non-repayable funding. He further noted that future efforts would focus on the section between Bacău and the town of Pașcani, some 80 kilometers north of Bacău. The goal is to finalise 320 km of this motorway, which goes from Ploiești (in the south) to Pașcani, by early next year. Known as the Moldova Motorway or the “motorway of the Union of the Romanian Principalities,” the route will eventually cover over 450 km, connecting Bucharest to the northern border with Ukraine.
Tax. The Romanian finance ministry will cut the excise duty on diesel by another 5%, following an initial 20% reduction decided two weeks ago under a special law passed this year. The measure, which will apply from September 1 to 15, follows a new bi-weekly assessment and was adopted against the backdrop of rising crude oil prices on international markets. The ministry says the additional cut in excise duties on diesel aims to limit the ripple effect of fuel costs, particularly in the transport sector, which directly impacts consumer goods prices. According to the Price Monitor app, a liter of standard diesel in Bucharest was approximately 10.15 lei (some 1.93 euros) on Sunday morning.
Parliament. The Parliament in Bucharest begins its autumn session on September 1st, and its goal include both voting in a government with full powers and adopting structural reforms, such as those concerning the central public administration and state-owned enterprises. The aim is to improve the efficiency of government institutions and ensure stricter oversight of the management of state-owned companies. Electoral reform is another legislative priority and bills on reducing the size of Parliament and the local administrative apparatus will be debated. Lawmakers will also focus on outstanding milestones under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The unified wage law is set to be discussed with trade unions to avoid income cuts in the public sector. Another objective is the reform of the health insurance budget, involving changes designed to unblock hiring in the system and optimise hospital funding. Regarding education, senators and deputies must decide whether to scrap the separate high school entrance exam or postpone its implementation.
Defence. Romania is prepared to assume a greater share of the responsibility for its own defense by increasing and honouring its commitments, said president Nicușor Dan after a meeting on Sunday with a U.S. Congressional delegation led by Mike Rogers. During the talks, held at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for transatlantic security and the need to further strengthen collective deterrence were highlighted. The Romanian president also said that expanding the U.S. economic and military presence in Romania is a priority for the bilateral partnership. On Saturday, the U.S. Congressional delegation was received by acting foreign minister Oana Țoiu.
Fires. The third contingent of Romanian firefighters arrived in Greece on Sunday to ensure the continuity of wildfire monitoring and extinguishing operations carried out over the past two weeks. According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the firefighters will be stationed in Nea Makri, a town in the Attica region located approximately 25 kilometers northeast of the Greek capital, Athens. Meanwhile, Romanian firefighters deployed in Serbia continued efforts to contain a forest fire in the Vojvodina province, in the country’s northeast. The Romanian firefighters’ missions in both countries are part of the European disaster assistance mechanism.
Referendum. Icelandic voters rejected the government’s proposal to resume EU accession negotiations. According to the results of a referendum held on Saturday, the opposing camp won by a margin of approximately 5%. The Icelandic government pledged to respect the outcome, even though it is merely consultative, and indicated that it would bring the issue of formally withdrawing its EU membership bid before Parliament. Iceland initially applied to join the EU in 2009, following the financial crisis that devastated its economy, but talks were frozen in 2013 when a Eurosceptic government came to power. Despite this decision, Iceland remains closely linked to the European Union through its participation in the single market and the free movement area. According to Agence France-Presse, the result is a disappointment for Brussels, which would have welcomed Iceland’s candidacy and was prepared to make any compromise necessary to see it join the bloc.
Rowing. Romania won the gold medal in the mixed eight race on Sunday at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. The Romanian crew, including Cristina Drugă, Amalia Chelaru, Adriana Adam, Florin Lehaci, Cosmin Iulian Pleşescu, Ciprian Tudosă, Ştefan Berariu, Simona Radiş and Victoria Petreanu, finished in 5:35.75, followed by the host nation and the United States. Rowers Adriana Adam and Simona Radiş thus won their third gold medal in this competition, after that in the women’s eight and the women’s pair events, their best tally in a single edition of the World Championships. Romania finished fourth in the medal standings, after the Netherlands, Germany and the USA. At last year’s 2025 World Championships held in Shanghai, Romania won six medals: two gold and four silver.
