Ship. State institutions will look into the circumstances of the serious incident involving the vessel LPG Gas Lisbon, said Romanian president Nicușor Dan. He announced on Facebook that the vessel, which was sailing under the Liberian flag, was struck outside Romania’s territorial waters, approximately 20 nautical miles off the Romanian coast. Shortly after the incident, two vessels from the Romanian Agency for Saving Human Lives at Sea were deployed to the site and evacuated the entire crew, including three people who were injured, bringing everyone safely to the shore, the president said. Also, a tugboat dispatched to the area is making sure the vessel does not drift and poses no further threat to navigational safety. “State institutions are on alert and will clarify the circumstances, causes, and accountabilities regarding this serious incident, which was most likely part of the Russian Federation’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine,” Nicușor Dan said in his post. Meanwhile, the defence ministry has announced that it has an IAR-330 Puma Naval helicopter and two Romanian Naval Forces military vessels on standby to support the agencies managing the incident in the Black Sea, where the Liberian tanker caught fire. The vessel had left from the port of Alexandria, Egypt, and was en route to the Ukrainian port of Reni.

Gas. OMV Petrom and Romgaz said they finalised the installation of an offshore production platform for Neptun Deep, Romania’s biggest natural gas project. Work is on schedule for production to begin in 2027, which will help consolidate energy security for Romania and the whole region. Located in waters that are around 120 meters deep, the platform, called Neptun Alpha, is over 225 meters tall and weighs 16,500 tonnes, according to a press release. The platform is fully automated and can be operated remotely. Representatives from the two companies also reported the completion of six out of the ten development wells, as well as the installation of the 160-kilometer pipeline connecting the platform to the shore. The platform will ensure the natural gas processing  and its transfer to the transport infrastructure that will bring it to shore. Romgaz is the largest natural gas producer and main supplier in Romania, with the Romanian state as the majority shareholder, holding a 70% stake, while OMV Petrom is the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe.

Danube. Water levels on the Romanian section of the Danube dropped over the weekend to their lowest point since 1996, leading to irrigation restrictions for farmers and partially disrupting shipping and tourism along its banks, Reuters reports. The agency notes that waterways across Europe have been affected by prolonged heatwaves and drought this year. The authorities said the flow rate at the point where Europe’s second-longest river enters Romania was 1,700 cubic meters per second on Sunday, compared to a July average of 4,700 cubic meters per second. Images show long stretches of exposed sand along the banks near the border with neighboring Bulgaria, with several ferry services suspended and grain barges unable to operate. Romania is one of the European Union’s largest grain sellers and an active exporter. Authorities have restricted farmers’ access to water for crop irrigation in southeastern Romania and have been monitoring water reservoirs to ensure minimum levels required to cool the two reactors at the state-owned nuclear power plant Nuclearelectrica, Reuters notes. The water management agency announced that Danube water levels would gradually rise starting on Monday, thanks to heavy rains in several counties.

Flooding. Ten localities in Prahova county (in the south of Romania) have been affected by flooding over the past 24 hours. Dozens of homes and yards were flooded, and National Road 1 was partially covered by debris and a landslide, according to the Prahova Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. More than 200 firefighters were deployed to assist residents by pumping water out of homes, yards and basements and clearing fallen trees. (CM)
