TALKS Romania’s president, Nicusor Dan, has invited the presidents of the parties and other political groups represented in Parliament for a new round of talks on Thursday for the designation of a candidate for the position of Prime Minister, the presidential administration has reported. In the meantime the talks between the PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR for a new government have continued and are expected to end up with an agreement shortly. Political sources are indicating Liberal leader, Ilie Bolojan, as the favourite to be nominated for the position, although it is not clear how long his mandate will be until the rotation. In another development, President Dan told a TV station the leader of the pro-European parties have agreed 75-80% over the austerity measures. He also held talks on Monday with leaders of the trade unions that are representative at national level on the potential solutions aimed at curbing the excessive budget deficit.
CONFERENCE The head of the Romanian diplomacy, Emil Hurezeanu, on Tuesday participated by means of a video-conference in the informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the EU member states focusing on the latest developments in the Middle East. According to a communiqué released by the Foreign Ministry in Bucharest, Hurezeanu voiced the profound concern about the escalation of the security situation in the Middle East and underlined the need for reducing the tension in the region and resuming diplomatic efforts meant to achieve a negotiated and verifiable solution concerning the Iranian nuclear programme. During the talks, the Romanian official reconfirmed the commitment to Israel’s security and underlined the need of exerting more pressure on the regime in Tehran to make it comply with the norms of the International Atomic Energy Agency and resume negotiations. Emil Hurezeanu also mentioned the possibility for the EU countries of issuing a joint request for easing the repatriation of the nationals blocked in Israel and Iran.
MADR The Romanian Ministry of Agriculture (MADR) has sent the European Commission a formal request for a special financial support from the EU’s agricultural reserve in the context of the significant losses incurred by the Romanian farmers in the winegrowing and fruit-growing sectors. According to a MADR communiqué in the spring of this year, fruit-growing and winegrowing areas in several regions around Romania were affected by successive periods of freezing. According to estimates, more than 16 thousand hectares of farmland have been compromised while the farmers incurred losses of over 49 million euros.
ENVIRONMENT Romania firmly supports competitiveness in the car-making industry and the consolidated recycling, which are essential for a transition towards an effective circular economy, the country’s Environment Minister, Mircea Fechet, said on Tuesday, as he was participating in the EU Environment Ministers Meeting in Luxembourg. The Romanian official met his EU counterparts to analyze, as he puts it, “ways of building a more sustainable automotive industry, to talk about climate change, the national plans concerning energy and climate as well as about how we can increase Europe’s resilience in the field of water management.” “As Romania has recently faced a series of episodes of disastrous flooding, I drew attention to the importance of the European strategy for resilience in the field of water management and of stepping up cross-border cooperation including in the Black Sea region” the Romanian Minister says from Luxembourg.
