Celebration. Romanian President Nicuşor Dan conveyed a message on the occasion of the Day of Hungarians Everywhere, March 15th, stating that this day is an opportunity to recognize the contribution of Hungarians in Romania to the development of our nation through interethnic and intercultural dialogue. The permanent partnership between the majority and minorities has been a key strength in the country’s modernization and full integration into the European Union, the head of state stressed. The Hungarian community in Romania is an important part of society, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said in turn, noting that the strength of a modern nation lies in its ability to turn diversity into an advantage and a resource for development. Hungarian Day is celebrated in several towns in central Romania, where the Hungarian minority is concentrated. It coincides with the 178th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1848 Revolution in Hungary. Hungarian President Sulyok Tamás was invited to the ceremonies.
Vote. The National Political Council of the Social Democratic Party, a member of the four-party coalition currently governing Romania, is meeting today to decide whether the Social Democrats will vote in Parliament in favor of the 2026 budget. The draft budget reached the legislature on Friday and is expected to receive a final vote next week. The Social Democrats would like the budget to be amended, particularly in the area of social solidarity. The Bucharest press notes that the budget is a test for the PSD–PNL–USR–UDMR coalition. Commentators say the PSD would like to see Liberal Ilie Bolojan step down as head of the executive branch and the USR leave the coalition.
Protest. Students from the National Alliance of Student Organizations in Romania protested on Saturday in Bucharest to convey a message about the need for adequate funding for education. According to representatives of the organization, education is facing a series of austerity measures adopted as early as last year, which have “directly affected” students’ rights and academic conditions. These include limiting the 90% discount on rail travel to only the route between home and the university campus, cutting the scholarship and social protection fund in half, and eliminating the possibility for students enrolled in tuition-based programs to receive scholarships. The new Minister of Education, Mihai Dimian, spoke with the protesting students. Similar protests have also taken place in other university cities across the country.
War. Several Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, have reported new missile and drone attacks from Iran, dpa reported today. The news agency notes that the United Arab Emirates has been the target of the most attacks among the Gulf states during the conflict with Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump, on the other hand, has stated that he is not currently prepared to conclude an agreement to end the war. He emphasized, however, that any potential agreement would require Iran to abandon all its nuclear ambitions. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards vowed on Sunday to hunt down and kill Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the 16th day of the war between the Islamic Republic, Israel, and the United States, AFP reports. For its part, Israel announced that it had launched a wave of attacks in western Iran against the infrastructure of the regime in Tehran.
Rugby. Romania’s national team faces Spain today in Madrid in the bronze medal match of the 2026 Rugby Europe Championship. Both teams lost their semifinal matches a week ago: Romania was defeated by Georgia, 53-30, in Tbilisi, while Spain was defeated by Portugal, 26-7, in Lisbon. Last season, Romania also played in the third-place match of the Rugby Europe Championship, defeating Portugal 21-7.
