12 EU Member States call for increased Arctic presence

Twelve EU member states, including Romania, Germany, France, Greece and Sweden, are calling on Brussels to step up its presence in the Arctic region, an area of growing geopolitical tension. AFP reports that in a joint statement released at the end of the summit in Finland, the 12 nations stated that the EU must play a larger role in a region where Russia, China and the United States are competing for dominance. The melting of Arctic ice is opening new maritime routes and enabling the exploitation of regional mineral resources.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan also attended the summit. Ahead of the talks, the president noted that Romania is a key nation on NATO’s Eastern Flank that, much like Arctic countries, faces security threats from the Russian Federation. He also highlighted attractive economic opportunities, noting Romania’s expertise in mineral extraction and processing. Nicușor Dan underlined ongoing collaboration between the Romanian Geological Institute and its Finnish counterpart, as well as Romania’s background in military shipbuilding, creating a favorable framework for joint investment across both the Eastern Flank and the Arctic.

Political crisis in Bucharest: President calls consultations for new Prime Minister

Romanian President Nicușor Dan intends to invite political parties for consultations and nominate a candidate for Prime Minister this week, as announced during an interview to Euronews Romania. Although parties have maintained their firm stances following the government’s dismissal and no governing majority is in sight, the President indicated that the decision can no longer be delayed.

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) stated it is prepared to take power. The National Liberal Party (PNL) and USR refuse to join an executive alongside the Social Democrats, with the Liberals advancing the idea of an “truce government” composed of technocrats. PSD, PNL and USR have also not ruled out early elections, an option supported by the nationalist opposition party, AUR, since the start of the political crisis.

The previous Bucharest cabinet, made up of PNL, USR and UDMR, was ousted in May through a motion of no confidence introduced by PSD and AUR. Since then, two prime ministerial nominations put forward by the president have failed.

Additionally, INS reported that the employment rate for Romanians aged 20 to 64 stood at around 70% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to Q1, while the unemployment rate reached 6.8%, an increase of 0.3% for the reference period. Regarding inflation, the pace of price increases continued its downward trend last month, though the indicator remains relatively high.

Running until December 31, the aid will be distributed as direct grants of up to €50,000 per enterprise.
