Corona Brașov ice hockey team has wrapped up the regular season of the regional Erste Liga in first place.

In the Romanian ice hockey championship derby, played on the brand-new rink in Remetea, Harghita County, ACSH Gheorgheni defeated CSM Corona Brașov 7–3. The Harghita side’s top scorer was American Dallas Gerads, who netted three goals. With this win, Gheorgheni leapfrogs Brașov at the top of the standings. The match also counted towards the regional Erste Liga, which has just finished its regular season. But here, Corona holds onto first place, with a single point more than Gheorgheni.
Switching to volleyball, let’s start with the women’s competitions. CSO Voluntari scored a 3–2 away victory against Poland’s Moya Radomka Radom in the first leg of the CEV Cup playoffs. The return match is set for next Wednesday in Bucharest. In the Champions League, Alba Blaj lost 0–3 at home to Italy’s Savino del Bene Scandicci and now sits at the bottom of Group A, with zero points. Next Wednesday, the team from Transylvania will face France’s Volero Le Cannet at home.
On the men’s side, SCM Zalău dramatically qualified for the Challenge Cup quarterfinals after beating Switzerland’s Volley Naeffels 3–0 at home, then clinching the “golden set” 15–11. In the first leg of the round of 16, played in Switzerland, Zalău had lost by the same score, 0–3. In the CEV Cup round of 16, Corona Brașov was defeated at home by Orion Stars Doetinchem, 3–0. The Dutch team had also won the first leg on their own turf, again 3–0. Dinamo Bucharest exited the competition on Tuesday. After winning the home leg 3–0, the Romanian side lost the return leg in France to Poitiers, 3–0, then 16–14 in the “golden set”.
In men’s basketball EuroCup Group A, U-BT Cluj-Napoca was narrowly beaten away by Spain’s BAXI Manresa, 101–99. The Romanian champions started strong, with a 13-point lead after the first quarter. The Spaniards fought back, and the finish was dramatic. Cluj led 99–97 in the final minute, but the hosts turned the score around, and the Transylvanian team missed their last attack. Cluj now sits sixth in the standings and will play away at Hapoel Jerusalem on February 4, then at home against Aris Thessaloniki on February 11. (VP)
