Romania started off on the right foot at the U20 women’s handball championship underway these days in China. On Wednesday our handballers clinched a 40 – 15 win against Canada, in a game counting towards Group C. Romania’s best player proved to be Enryka-Valentina Bodijar, who scored 7 goals. Goalkeeper Florentina Roşu, also managed a good show with eleven saves. In the group’s other match, Germany defeated Brazil 39-22.
At the WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg, Germany, which is played on grass, Gabriela Ruse qualified for the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Romanian player who ranks 105 in the world standings on Wednesday secured a 7-5, 6-2 win against the Russian Anna Kalynskaya, WTA 20. In the previous round, Gabriela won against fifth seeded Linda Noskova, of Czechia. Also in the round of 16, Irina Begu was defeated by the Czech challenger Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-1.
Romania’s world and Olympic champion, David Popovici on Friday will participate in the international swimming competition, Sette Colli, in Rome. The Romanian will be racing in the swimming pool where in 2022 he broke the world record in the 100 meter free-style race. Now he will be participating in the 50, 100 and 200 meters free-style races. The Romanian delegation in Rome also includes, Denis Popescu, Robert Badea, Darius Coman, Eric Andrieş and Alexandru Constantinescu. The competition in Rome is a good opportunity for swimmers to test their abilities in the company of the world elite before the European championships due in Paris in mid-August.
We end with football as the Romanian football sides are in full training season. Romania’s champions, Universitatea Craiova, is training in Austria, where on Wednesday they ended in a one-all draw their game against the Azeri champion side, Sabah. Luca Băsceanu scored for the Romanian side which will have their last game this season against Ukrainian side Polisia Jitomir.
Corvinul Hunedoara, a football side, which recently joined Romania’s first football league is in Slovenia. In the first match of their training session, the team coached by de Florin Maxim lost 1-0 on Friday to Brinje Grosuplje, a Slovenian eleven that has recently joined the country’s first football league. On June 28th, Corvinul will be playing the Hungarian second-leaguer Nagykanizsa, and Slovania’s vice-champions FC Koper on July 2nd.
