The French city of Antony last week hosted the European Fencing Championships. Romania ended the competition in the eighth position of the nation’s ranking with two medals. Romania’s saber team made up of Vlad Covaliu, George Dragomir, Radu Niţu and Răzvan Ursachi won silver while in the individual saber event George Dragomir won bronze. Italy won the first position in the ranking with four gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
The city of Cluj-Napoca saw the European U-21 Table Tennis Championships.
On Sunday, Bianca Mei-Roşu won gold in the women’s singles after beating Slovenian Sara Tokic 4-1 in the finals. Iulian Chiriţă also became gold medalist, after he and Anna Hursey of Wales had won the mixed doubles. Bianca Mei-Roşu and Ukrainian Veronika Matiunina walked away with silver from the women’s doubles. Andrei Istrate and Nicole Arlia of Italy stepped onto the podium’s third step in the mixed doubles and so did Darius Movileanu, in the men’s singles.
Now let’s have a look at the latest from lawn tennis. On Sunday, Dan Alexandru Tomescu emerged as winner of the ITF tournament in Constanţa, southeastern Romania, a competition with 15,000 dollars in prize money.
In the finals he defeated his compatriot, Gabi Boitan, the odds-on favourite, who abandoned in the third set when it was 4-6, 6-3, 3-0 to Tomescu. This has been the third ITF title in Tomescu’s career and the first this year.
Romania’s football side Universitatea Craiova on Sunday clinched a 7-1 win against the Austrian amateur side FC Stubai in the first match part of their training campaign in Austria, the Romanian champions announced on Facebook. Craiova will take on the Azerbaijani champions Sabah on Wednesday.
Romania’s vice-champions, Universitatea Cluj, conceded defeat 2-1 to the U-19 selection of Croatia also in Austria on Sunday. The team coached by Cristiano Bergodi will be up against the Hungarian side Ujpest Budapest on Saturday.
