The
countdown to the official opening – between February 17 and 19 – of the
Timişoara European Cultural Capital 2023 program has begun. In
anticipation of the moment, it is known that numerous international cultural personalities
will arrive, this year, in the beautiful city in western Romania, including the
exceptional John Malkovich and Isabella Rossellini. The two actors will perform
on the stage of the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre. Here is Ada Hausvater,
the director of the institution:

Obviously, they are great actors, so when we talk about them we talk about the way in which they perform in a unique manner, which is only theirs, and I am convinced that both the audience and the critics will see those glimpses of eternity, of the universal that characterize their acting.

John Malkovich, who will come to Timisoara in June, will present the show The Infernal Comedy, and Isabella Rossellini is expected at the end of November with the one-woman -show Darwin’s Smile. On the other hand, artists from all over Romania have been invited to propose projects to complete the Timișoara European Capital of Culture program, which includes a multitude of events, from shows, concerts and premiere film screenings, to installations or a huge vertical garden in the center of the city on the banks of the Bega river.

In the spring, the Western University of Timişoara will enjoy the presence of three major personalities of world art and science, winners of the Nobel Prizes in the fields of literature and chemistry – the Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk and the French researchers Jean-Marie Lehn and Jean-Pierre Sauvage. Here is the mayor of Timisoara, Dominic Fritz, speaking about other participants:

We are extremely proud to have partners from all over the world, from the children’s choir in Brussels, to the Chameleon dance company in Manchester, the famous theater company Rimini Protokoll, orchestras from Gera, Cologne and other European cities. Also, all the great Romanian artists will come to Timisoara. We will have 12 music festivals, from baroque to rock, and 15 more theme festivals.ʺ

An exhibition dedicated to Victor Brauner (1903-1966), an emblematic figure of avant-garde and surrealist culture, will be part of the Timişoara European Capital of Culture 2023 program. However, the strong point will be the exhibition Brâncuşi: Romanian sources and universal perspectives this autumn, the first of such scope in the last 50 years in Romania. In 2023, Timişoara will hold the title of European Cultural Capital alongside the cities of Veszprém in Hungary and Elefsina in Greece. (MI)
