“The Golden Apple,” an award for excellence in tourism, is presented each year by the World Federation of Travel Journalists and Writers (FIJET) to organizations, countries, cities, or individuals, in recognition of outstanding efforts in promoting and improving the quality of tourism.
The other winners in 2026 are Cavtat in Croatia, Iași in Romania, and Kyperounta in Cyprus.
Lesbos is the third-largest island in Greece, boasting a mild Mediterranean climate, rich flora and fauna, hot springs, olive groves, and a unique petrified forest. It is also known for its picturesque traditional villages and local products such as ouzo and olive oil. Prominent personalities were born on the island, including the poets Sappho and Alcaeus, the philosopher Theophrastus, the painters Theophilos and Georgios Jakobides, and the Nobel laureate, poet and essayist Odysseas Elytis.
RRI’s Eugen Cojocariu spoke about Lesvos and the Golden Apple with Konstantinos Moutzouris, the Governor of the North Aegean Region.
We asked Nikos Giannakas, Vice Mayor of Tourism & Entrepreneurship of the Municipality of Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos, about the island’s main attractions.
Irene Nerantzi, a travel guide, explains why Romanians should visit Lesvos.
