Today we head north to arrive in Țara Dornelor, (the Dorna Land). Known for its unique landscapes, the region offers a variety of leisure options. Tourists can choose to hike on approved mountain trails or venture down the Bistrița River, choosing rafting. In addition to exploring the natural setting, in Țara Dornelor you can try out old crafts, such as egg painting, and admire traditional architecture. For relaxation, there is a rich offer of spa and wellness services, which complement the unique experience of peaceful Romanian village life.

To better understand the history and charm of these places, we spoke with Mihaela Cocârță, manager of the Țara Dornelor Destination Management Organization. We first learn about the legend of this destination.

Mihaela Cocârţă: The name comes from an old legend. It is said that Dorina, a very beautiful girl, lived in these lands, and a voivode fell in love with her. The story has a tragic ending, the young woman dying in a hunting accident, when the voivode mistook her for a deer. In her memory, he named that land «Dorina». This is where the names of the localities in the area derive, such as Vatra Dornei, Șaru Dornei or Dorna Candrenilor. Due to the presence of the word «Dorna» in the names of many settlements, the area became known geographically as Țara Dornelor or the Dorna Land.”

Beyond local legends, the destination offers visitors a return to their roots. Crafts are not only exhibited in museum windows, but are a living practice, integrated into the tourist experience, as Mihaela Cocârță explains.

Mihaela Cocârţă: “Depending on the time of year, traditions that have disappeared in other places can be relived here. For example, around Easter, tourists can go to the commune of Ciocănești to see the craft of painting eggs. Recently, through a project with European funds, eight traditional houses were renovated and opened to the public, each belonging to a local craftsman. They show exactly what life was like a hundred years ago, transposing the tourist into the reality of that era. Last but not least, local gastronomy and traditional products are the main pillars that define our culture. Also in Ciocănești, an old house was transformed into a small shop where you can buy objects made by local craftsmen. Also, at the Ethnographic Museum in Vatra Dornei, every Saturday, women from the area organize sewing workshops. Tourists can purchase these traditional shirts, but they can also learn how to sew, just like in those times.”

After exploring the heritage elements or hiking the mountain trails, the area offers modern relaxation facilities, complemented by the unparalleled charm of Bucovina villages.

Mihaela Cocârţă:” A modern SPA center was inaugurated two years ago at Dorna Candrenilor. It has various swimming pools, saunas and massage services. Thus, a tourist who chooses a demanding hike in the first part of the day can relax at the SPA in the evening, preparing for a new day of adventure. In Țara Dornelor, unlike other areas, tourists can still enjoy the quiet rural life, similar to the memories we have from our grandparents, when time flowed at a less brisk pace. Here they can find peace, listen to the murmur of the river and have the opportunity to experience authentic Romanian village life. Considering that we host numerous camps, large guesthouses organize visits to the farm, where children and their families learn how to milk cows or how to make cheese, living a one hundred percent authentic experience.”

Thanks to this mix between tourist infrastructure and unspoiled natural environment, Țara Dornelor has become a major attraction on the map of foreign tourists.

Mihaela Cocârţă: We are happy to welcome many foreign tourists, especially attracted by the Via Transilvanica route and the unspoiled nature, a concept that has become rare in other countries. Here, tourism has retained an authentic character. Foreign visitors particularly appreciate the fact that the destination is not overly commercialized, with the emphasis on preserving local traditions and culture. We have recently had tourists from Switzerland, but most come from Germany, the UK and Poland. We also have visitors from more distant destinations, but tourists from Europe predominate, because road and air access is easier.”

To support this interest and diversify the destination’s offerings, tourism representatives are carrying out constant rehabilitation projects and proposing a diverse calendar of events, as we learn from Mihaela Cocârță, manager of the Țara Dornelor Destination Management Organization.

Mihaela Cocârţă: “We have several important initiatives. One of them aims to rehabilitate a historical route located above the municipality of Vatra Dornei, called Promenada Runc. In the past, this was a very appreciated promenade area, from where the entire city could be admired. We are working on this project and hope to complete it soon, to offer visitors new opportunities to explore. We also have a rich calendar of events with tradition. In the summer, we organize sports competitions, art festivals and international music competitions. There is also the celebration of the Romanian blouse, the Ia’s Day, an event that attracts many tourists. For the cold season, for example in November, we are preparing an international cycling-cross competition, which will bring together participants from all over the world. All these events are announced on the internet. Online information is available on the official website, redescopera-taradornelor.ro. Physically, we are waiting for you at the National Center for Tourist Information and Promotion in Vatra Dornei, located opposite the Băi Train Station. There, in addition to maps and information materials, there is also an office of the “Mountain Rescue.”

So, whether you are looking for adrenaline on mountain trails, or you want to get to know Romanian traditions up close, or simply enjoy a relaxing SPA treatment, Țara Dornelor remains a year-round destination. Until your next tourist trip, we invite you to explore the wonders of Romania, with small steps, but with unforgettable memories.
