UN. President Nicuşor Dan will lead Romania’s delegation at the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, which is to take place in New York, the Presidential Administration announced on Friday. The central theme of the session is ‘Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all’. The Head of State will deliver Romania’s national statement to the plenary of the UN General Assembly on 23 September. He will highlight Romania’s efforts to support the organisation’s reform process and our country’s contribution to ensuring peace, security and a rules-based international order, the cited source indicated. On the sidelines of the high-level segment, the President will hold bilateral meetings with other heads of state or government, including to promote Romania’s candidacy for the leadership of the International Organisation of La Francophonie. Former Prime Minister and European Commissioner Dacian Cioloș is backed by Romania for the post of Secretary-General of the OIF.

Law. The major trade unions in the Romanian education sector are calling on all parliamentary political parties not to vote for the draft pay law should it reach Parliament. They consider that this latest draft proposed by the Government constitutes a direct affront to education workers, as it fails to take into account the legislation adopted and committed to by the Romanian state following the general strike in 2023. According to the trade unions, the adoption of the pay bill in its current form will dramatically exacerbate the human resources crisis in education, with repercussions affecting children, pupils and students, as well as the future of this country. Discussions between political leaders and President Nicuşor Dan on the public sector pay bill will continue next week, after Thursday’s consultations failed to produce an agreement. Participants were given a new version of the draft bill to review, which aims to take into account Romania’s fiscal requirements and commitments.

Fuel. The average price of fuels and lubricants for private transport in the European Union rose by 16.9 per cent in July 2026 compared with July 2025, but Romania is the Member State with the highest year-on-year price increases, according to data published on Friday by Eurostat. The highest price rises for fuels and lubricants for private transport were recorded in Romania (24.2 per cent), Germany and Lithuania (both 22.9 per cent) and Bulgaria (22.2 per cent). At the other end of the scale, the lowest price rises were recorded in Sweden (1.2 per cent) and Ireland (3.2 per cent). The only country where prices in July 2026 were lower than in July 2025 is Hungary, where prices fell slightly, by 0.1 per cent. Month-on-month, EU consumers saw diesel prices rise by an average of 4.3 per cent and petrol prices by 4.7 per cent in July. In Romania, according to Eurostat, diesel prices rose by 4.6 per cent, whilst petrol prices fell by 0.8 per cent in July 2026 compared with June 2026.

Senate. The Senate in Bucharest has been convened for an extraordinary session next week, from 24 to 26 August, announced the President of the Upper House of Parliament, Mircea Abrudean. He stated that the agenda includes the Hydrogen Bill, which is explicitly listed among the outstanding reforms required for the approval of Payment Request No. 5 under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), recently submitted by Romania, with a financial value of 2.84 billion euros. Mircea Abrudean also said that there will be other important and urgent bills to be debated, with the Senate acting as the deciding chamber for some of them. The deadline for adopting the reforms committed to in the PNRR is 31 August, and this may be the last extraordinary session organised to secure European funding.

Savings. Fewer than half of Romanians manage to save consistently, and 46 per cent say they set aside no more than 500 lei a month (less than 100 euros), according to a survey carried out by a private bank and published on Friday. Romanians’ actual ability to save remains limited and vulnerable to mounting pressures on their monthly budget, in a context where rising living costs are constantly reducing the amounts available after essential expenses have been covered, the research shows. Over 22 per cent of Romanians are not saving at all at present or are forced to draw on previously accumulated reserves. The data shows that, for many Romanians, saving remains more the result of a fragile balance at the end of the month than of a consistent financial plan. Financial goals for 2026 are mainly focused on building up savings and safeguarding personal stability, against a backdrop of concerns relating primarily to health and income, the study further notes.

Investigation. Security authorities in Germany discovered pistols hidden in a forest near Berlin last year and believe the weapons were to be used to carry out assassinations on behalf of the Russian secret services; one suspect has been arrested in Romania, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported on Friday, as cited by Reuters, AFP and dpa. The Romanian national is alleged to have been responsible for setting up the weapons cache. The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case, suspecting the planning of a serious act of violence that posed a threat to the state, according to the report. The newspaper stated that Germany’s domestic intelligence service, which had warned of an increased risk of sabotage or assassination attempts by Russia, is convinced that those who set up the hideout were acting on the orders of the Russian secret services. Potential targets included executives in the defence industry, opposition figures in exile and supporters of Ukraine, the media reported. (MI)
