As of Monday, June 23, Romania has a government with full powers. The Liberal Ilie Bolojan is to be the prime minister until April 2027, after which the government leadership will be taken over by the Social Democrats until December 2028, according to the power rotation system already implemented in the previous legislative term.

This is the central element of a political agreement concluded by the new ruling coalition in Bucharest, made up of the parties that had been in power before the parliamentary and presidential elections (the National Liberal Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania) plus Save Romania Union, which were in opposition until recently.

The agreement signatories have undertaken to govern responsibly and efficiently, in order to build a more just and fair society.

Ilie Bolojan: “I thank the coalition partners, because, regardless of doctrine leanings, regardless of the conflicts that have occurred in the past, in this difficult situation for Romania generated by the budget crisis, we had the maturity and responsibility to reach a political agreement that would ensure stable government in Romania.ʺ

Sorin Grindeanu promised that the Social Democrats would be a responsible and honest partner:

Sorin Grindeanu: “A significant share, over 70% of the almost 5,000 members of our party, voted to be part of this coalition. We have a lot to do and this is why we chose to join this coalition.”

Dominic Fritz, the president of Save Romania Union, is confident that the new coalition will regain citizens’ confidence in public institutions, while the leader of the UDMR Kelemen Hunor says that the new Government will have to make difficult decisions, but, if it succeeds, things will return to normal.

The Cabinet will have 16 ministries and 5 deputy prime ministers, 3 of whom do not hold a minister seat. One of the deputy prime ministers will coordinate the reform of the governmental apparatus and the streamlining of public institution activities.

Six ministers were nominated by the Social Democratic Party, 4 by the Liberals and Save Romania Union each, and 2 by UDMR.

Interviewed on Monday in an emergency procedure in Parliament peppered with sometimes noisy protests among the nationalist opposition, all the candidates for the new Cabinet passed the specialist committee review with flying colours, and were then endorsed in a joint session of Parliament.

With 3 of its 6 ministers also part of the old government, the Social Democratic Party will oversee the transport, agriculture, justice, energy, healthcare and labour ministries in the new Cabinet. Liberal ministers will handle the home affairs, education, finance and European funds. Save Romania Union will coordinate the country’s defence, foreign affairs, economy and environment, while the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania will be in charge of the development ministry and the culture ministry.
