Romania reiterates its support for its ex-Soviet neighbours, Moldova and Ukraine

Romania supports in every way the Republic of Moldova’s path to EU accession, Romania’s PM Ilie Bolojan said during a working visit to Chisinau on Saturday. After a meeting with the head of the pro-Western government in Chisinau, Dorin Recean, the Romanian PM mentioned that, in recent years, Moldova had to face unprecedented pressures, but managed to preserve its sovereignty and independence, and became an example of courage as it withstood Russia’s energy blackmail, propaganda and hybrid aggression.

According to Radio Romania correspondents in Chisinau, the two prime ministers analysed the bilateral economic cooperation, major infrastructure projects, such as power lines and bridges over the River Prut border, and ways to facilitate border crossings. Dorin Recean thanked Romania for helping Moldova secure its energy independence. He explained that at present 50% of Moldova’s electricity needs are covered by Romanian supplies at favourable prices. Moreover, Recean added, Romania is today one of the main markets for Moldovan products, such as electrical conductors, wines and furniture.

Moldova and Romania support each other and are building a secure and thriving European future, president Maia Sandu said in turn, after a meeting with PM Bolojan. “Everything we achieve together, from energy and infrastructure to investments and jobs, means more stability, more opportunities, and, for the Republic of Moldova, concrete steps towards EU membership,” the Moldovan official said.

For the Republic of Moldova, parliamentary elections are coming up on September 28. They are decisive not only from a political, but also from a geopolitical point of view. After a government term with mixed results, the popularity of the current administration has declined considerably. And the emerging alternative, represented by political blocs that are openly pro-Moscow, could undo years of efforts towards the country’s EU membership.

On Sunday, president Nicuşor Dan sent a message in which he also reiterated Romania’s support for what he called Ukraine’s legitimate effort to defend itself from the Russian invaders. On the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union and three and a half years since Russia’s full-scale invasion, president Dan announced that Romania will also support the reconstruction and European integration efforts of its neighbouring state.

He praised the Ukrainians’ determination to defend their country as “a powerful example of the fight for freedom and democracy against an autocratic enemy.” “On this special day, I wish our Ukrainian friends renewed strength and unwavering hope for a better future,” the Romanian head of state concluded.
