The Role of Diplomacy Must be Consolidated

Romania’s belonging in NATO and the UE as well as the Strategic Partnership with the United States are fundaments of Romania’s foreign policy

In a first on Monday, Romania’s new president Nicusor Dan received the heads of the country’s diplomatic missions and consular offices as well as the directors of the Romanian cultural institutes abroad.

Speaking at the Annual Meeting of the Romanian Diplomacy, the head of the Romanian state has said the foreign policy must adjust as the world has for several years now been confronted with multiple crises. The conflict in the neighbouring Ukraine invaded by the Russian troops, a global competition focused on economy and resources as well as the hybrid assault against democracy by dictatorial regimes are real challenges in the world nowadays.

In this global chaos, President Nicuşor Dan says that

Nicusor Dan:” Our foreign policy must remain predictable and coherent. And here, our belonging in the European Union and NATO, the Strategic partnership with the United States, the respect for international law and world order based on rules, the dialogue and cooperation with our international partners – these are things we are not going to change. There are three directions we are going to emphasize: security, economic dimension and the Romanians outside the country’s borders.”

On the other hand, Romania’s accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development represents a strategic objective of Bucharest’s and  has as deadline the end of the year 2026 – the President went on to say. He believes that is the time when Romania’s economy will get relaunched.

Nicusor Dan: “We need an effort of the interior in which the Presidency, the Government, the Ministry of the Economy define Romania’s strategic economic priorities through a dialogue with the companies in Romania, which we haven’t had yet to be very honest, and there is an effort you need to make so that Romania’s private environment may be able to develop partnerships and economically develop in the countries you are representing us.”

In his address the president spoke about the opportunities offered by Romania’s geographical position, which can become, in his opinion, a connectivity hub between Europe, Asia and Africa. He added that the Black Sea strategy must be part of this move.

At the same meeting, Romania’s Foreign Minister, Oana Ţoiu of the Save Romania Union, said that Russia remains the main security challenge irrespective of the outcome of the peace talks with Ukraine. Also attending the meeting, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, PSD leader, Sorin Grindeanu, said the transatlantic unity and European solidarity remain crucial for Romania. In turn, the Senate president, Liberal Mircea Abrudean, said the Parliamentarian diplomacy is an essential component of Romania’s foreign policy.
