Increasingly unpredictable, the actions of the Russian invasion army against Ukraine have long become a danger for its neighbors. Romanians in Tulcea (southeastern Romania) have now become accustomed to being woken up in the middle of the night by alert messages announcing that Russian drones, launched, presumably, against targets on Ukrainian territory, are approaching Romanian airspace or even violating it.

On Wednesday, the swarm of drones that entered Poland created an unprecedented situation. Warsaw mobilized its own air defense systems and those of NATO, to shoot down the unmanned flying vehicles. Poland, the international media notes, is thus getting involved, for the first time, in the war in neighboring Ukraine and does not hesitate to call the violation of its airspace an act of aggression. From Washington to Brussels, from Tallinn to Sofia, all of Poland’s allies and partners have expressed their solidarity with it and their outrage at the irresponsible behavior of the Russians.

In Bucharest, the ambassador of the Russian Federation was summoned, on Thursday, to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to be informed of Romania’s position condemning the violation of Poland’s airspace. “The Romanian side stressed that, by its gravity, implications and scope, the incident represents an unprecedented escalation, as well as a threat to the security of the citizens of an allied state and strategic partner of Romania. This incident illustrates once again the wide, severe consequences of the war of aggression waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, on regional stability and European security,” reads a statement from the Bucharest diplomacy, sent to the press.

According to the source, the Foreign Ministry also reminded the Russian ambassador about the previous attacks by Russian forces against Ukrainian targets, in the vicinity of the border with Romania. “The irresponsible nature of these attacks, which affect national security and stability in the wider Black Sea region and the imperative of respecting sovereignty and international law at the mouths of the Danube, was emphasized again,” the ministry said.

Previously, the President of Romania, Nicuşor Dan, had assessed that Poland and NATO countries, in general, have demonstrated that they are prepared and have a real-time reaction. He mentioned that, if Romania were to face a similar situation, the authorities here, supported by the allies, would reactin the same manner. Regarding the local law that allows the Romanian Army to shoot down drones, the head of state says that the related procedures have been well defined. “It is clear who intervenes, who gives the order. Everything is absolutely clear,” said President Nicusor Dan. (EE)
