Mercenary Horaţiu Potra, listed on an international wanted list by Romanian authorities for attempting to carry out actions against the constitutional order, was brought back into the country on Thursday evening, from Dubai. A close associate of former sovereignist presidential candidate Călin Georgescu and controversial businessman Vasile Frank Timiş (known for his role in the Roşia Montană gold-mining scandal), Potra was extradited from the United Arab Emirates jointly with his son and grandson. All three were taken to the custody by the Romanian Police, pending legal proceedings.

Along with 20 other members of his group, Horațiu Potra has been indicted by the Prosecutor General’s Office for attempting to carry out actions against the constitutional order, violating weapons and ammunition regulations, violating the rules governing explosive materials, unauthorized operations with pyrotechnic articles and public incitement. In the same case, former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu is also standing trial. Romanian prosecutors claim he planned an operation to infiltrate the protests organized immediately after the annulment of the December 2024 presidential election, with the aim of stirring social unrest and chaos.

Back in the 1990s, Potra served as a fighter in the French Foreign Legion. After leaving the unit, he was part of the presidential guard of the president of the Central African Republic, Ange-Félix Patassé, then went on to become head of personal security for the Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and later worked for former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo.

In the mid-2000s, Potra returned to Romania and founded the association “Romanians who served in the French Legion”, and in 2012 he led the bodyguard detachment of businessman Frank Timiș. Timiș entrusted him with security responsibilities for the mines owned by his companies in Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Niger.

Between 2016 and 2019, Potra worked as a security consultant and trainer for the Presidential Guard of the Central African Republic, and from 2022 to 2024 he headed the detachment of former Romanian soldiers deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo to train the Congolese army.

In 2022, he also entered Romanian politics, becoming a leader of the nationalist party Alliance for the Homeland, and in 2024 he won a local council seat in the town of Mediaş, representing the Patriots’ Party.

This spring, in the middle of the investigation run by the Prosecutor General’s Office, Horaţiu Potra left Romania together with his son and grandson and took refuge in the United Arab Emirates, from where he frequently posted messages inciting armed revolt. On September 29, the three were detained in Dubai, and Romanian authorities launched extradition procedures.

On Thursday evening, Romanian president Nicuşor Dan said the operation to bring the Potra family back to the country confirms the state’s firm commitment: the constitutional order must be defended, and those suspected of acting against it will face justice, the president added. (VP)
