FCSB’s European campaign has come to an end. On Thursday, Romania’s champions played their final Europa League match. In Bucharest, the red-and-blues drew 1-1 with Turkish side Fenerbahce, finishing the competition in 27th place. The top eight teams advance directly to the quarterfinals, while those ranked 9th through 24th will contest playoff matches for a spot in the round of 16.
The match in Bucharest between FCSB and Fenerbahce was evenly balanced. Darius Olaru and his teammates performed above their season average, rising above their opponents in many moments of the game, despite Fenerbahce arriving in Bucharest with all their stars. The visitors scored first on minute 19 through Ismail Yuksek. FCSB evened the odds in the second half on minute 71 via Italian Juri Cisotti. The Romanian champions exit the competition with two wins, five defeats and one draw. They defeated Dutch sides Go Ahead Eagles and Feyenoord, but lost to Young Boys Bern, Bologna, Basel, Red Star Belgrade and Dinamo Zagreb. Adding to that is Thursday’s draw.
This weekend brings matchday 24 of the Romanian Football Super League. Friday features two matches: CFR Cluj versus Metaloglobus and Dinamo Bucharest versus Petrolul Ploiești. Saturday in Slobozia, Unirea faces Hermannstadt. Then in Mioveni, FC Argeș meets Transylvanian side UTA. The day concludes with the Bucharest derby between Rapid and Universitatea Cluj. Sunday in Ovidiu, Farul Constanța plays against Universitatea Craiova, followed by FCSB’s home match against Csikszereda in Bucharest. The final match of the round comes Monday: FC Botoșani versus Oțelul Galați. In the standings, Craiova leads with 46 points, followed by Rapid with 45 and Dinamo with 44.
We should note that the Romanian Football Federation and the Professional Football League have decided that all matches on matchday 24 will be preceded by a moment of silence. Romanian football is paying tribute to supporters of Greek club PAOK Thessaloniki who perished Tuesday in a horrific road accident on a highway in Timiș County in western Romania. (VP)
