Aviation Day. The modernization of the Air Force is a strategic priority for Romania, and major procurement programs, as well as ongoing training activities, are enhancing the operational capacity of this branch of the military and ensuring the integration of the latest capabilities, President Nicuşor Dan said on Romanian Aviation and Air Force Day. The President highlighted the sacrifice of all those who gave their lives in combat missions, in theaters of operations, during military exercises, or while responding to emergencies. In the current security context, marked by the Russian Federation’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine and persistent challenges to regional stability, the Romanian Air Force plays a particularly important role in defending national airspace and in strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defense posture in the Black Sea region and on the Alliance’s eastern flank, Nicuşor Dan added.

Strike. A two-hour warning strike took place this morning in the public health care system to protest the new pay law. As a result, for two hours, medical services were reduced to one-third of normal levels, and only emergency care was provided. Representatives of the Sanitas Federation say that the new bill perpetuates wage inequities among different professional categories within the system and results in significant income losses for some employees. Union leaders warn that, in the absence of solutions, they could call for a general strike starting July 28. The legislation drafted by the Ministry of Labor changes the method for setting public sector salaries, primarily by introducing a 12-grade pay scale with minimum and maximum coefficients, and by reducing the cap on bonuses from 30% to 20% of the base salary. A final political decision on whether to approve or reject the text is expected on Tuesday, when leaders of the former governing coalition will meet again to discuss this bill. The adoption of the legislation is an important milestone in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which is now in its final stages after being delayed for several years. If the bill is not adopted by Parliament within one month, Romania will permanently lose nearly 800 million euros.

London. Andy Burnham, who was named leader of the UK’s Labour Party on Friday at an extraordinary party conference in London, is officially taking office today at Downing Street, where he succeeds outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Andy Burnham has pledged to restore hope to the British people, spoke about the need to reindustrialize the country, and stressed that he wants to oversee the greatest shift of power from London to the regions of the United Kingdom. He is convinced that, during his term, he will reduce the inequality and anger felt by communities that have been left behind, which have increasingly turned to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party. Andy Burnham, 56, previously served as mayor of Manchester.

Iran. The United States struck targets in Iran for the ninth consecutive night, following a weekend in which three U.S. service members were killed in Iranian attacks in Jordan and Iraq. Reuters reports that, in total, since the war broke out, 17 U.S. service members have lost their lives and more than 420 have been wounded. Tehran’s forces also continued their attacks, striking, among other targets, a U.S. base in Syria. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards also stated that two oil tankers are burning in the Strait of Hormuz because they did not follow an approved route. The current wave of violence was triggered by Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, which was subsequently closed again by Tehran. The resumption of hostilities has led to a rise in oil prices on international markets. The price of a barrel of Brent crude rose 3% today, surpassing the 90 USD mark for the first time in more than a month.

Weather. The National Meteorological Administration in Bucharest has issued an Orange Alert and several Yellow Alerts for atmospheric instability, heavy downpours, strong winds, and storms, valid across half the country through Tuesday evening. An Orange Alert will be in effect today for heavy downpours, strong squalls, and medium-sized and possibly large hail in the east, south, and locally in the Southern and Eastern Carpathians. Also today,  a Yellow Alert for unstable weather will be in effect, covering areas in the east, south, and center, as well as most of the Southern and Eastern Carpathians, where torrential downpours, lightning, strong winds, and storms are expected. Meteorologists have also issued a Yellow Alert for a heat wave and high thermal discomfort, valid through Tuesday in nine southern counties and in Bucharest. Today, maximum temperatures range from 23 to 35 degrees Celsius. (mi)
