Government. Prime minister designate Eugen Tomac continued talks with the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, representatives of national minorities and smaller political groups in Parliament on Tuesday, after discussing on Monday with the major parties in the former government coalition, namely the National Liberal Party, the Save Romania Union and the Social Democratic Party. He tried to gain support for the technocratic government he will propose in Parliament, but has so far failed to secure clear support from any of the parties. He called on them to break away from a logic of restraint and to be open to dialogue, in order to unblock the current political crisis. The healthiest solution is to have a government in place as quickly as possible, capable of tackling some of Romania’s urgent problems, because time is pressing, said the Prime Minister-designate, who mentioned Romania’s commitments under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan among these priorities. In an interview to Radio Romania, Eugen Tomac said he may finalise the membership of the cabinet he will propose on Wednesday. He added that the government program presented to the parliamentary parties does not aim for major changes or tax increases.

Economy The National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis (CNSP) estimates that economic growth will decline in 2026, from 1% in the previous forecast to 0.1%, due to current macroeconomic conditions. For 2027, Romania’s National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis estimates an economic growth of 2.2%. The recovery in 2027 will be supported by lower inflation and more favorable financing conditions, according to the forecast. Growth will continue in the coming years, reaching 2.4% in 2028 and 2.1% in 2029. For 2026, other international financial institutions have also issued pessimistic economic forecasts.

Protest. In Romania, the SANITAS trade union federation on Tuesday began a work-to-rule strike in hospitals and social care facilities, with employees wearing armbands. Union members are sending a warning to the authorities and say they may resort to a general strike if their demands regarding pay and staff rights continue to be ignored. Sanitas representatives said they wish to find solutions through dialogue and avoid escalating the social conflict, as they are dissatisfied with the new pay law. The Sanitas Federation is one of the largest trade union organisations in the health and social care sector in Romania, representing employees in hospitals, medical facilities, and social care institutions across the country.

Drone. President Nicuşor Dan had a telephone conversation on Tuesday with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, telling him that the Russian drone incident in Galaţi (eastern Romania) should be reflected in the conclusions of EU summit held on June 18 and 19 in Brussels. “I have argued for the reflection in the Conclusions of the European Council of the serious incident caused by the Russian drone in Galaţi and the renewed condemnation of the actions undertaken by Russia, which continues to escalate the conflict through the repeated and unacceptable violation of the airspace of the European Union’s member states. These tactics are intolerable and it is imperative that they should be firmly condemned”, the president said on a social network. He also said that Romania will further seek to ensure that the projects that are part of the Eastern Flank Watch initiative become operational as complements to NATO’s initiatives to contribute to European defence and security. A Russian drone crashed, on the evening of May 28th on a block of flats in the Romanian city of Galaţi, injuring two people and causing material damage.

Tennis. Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea reached the second round at Queen’s Club tournament in London, worth over 1.9 million dollars in prize money, after defeating Australia’s Maddison Inglis, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Cîrstea will next face the British player of Romanian origin Emma Răducanu, who defeated Russia’s Ana Blinkova. On Monday, Jaqueline Cristian also qualified for the second round of the tournament after defeating China’s Qinwen Zheng, the Olympic champion in Paris. In the round of last 16, Jaqueline Cristian will face Katie Boulter of Great Britain. (CM)
