CCR Romania’s Constitutional Court (CCR)
on Wednesday ruled there is a conflict of state powers regarding the
rejection of a request to revoke the head of the National Anti-corruption
Directorate Laura Codruta Kovesi. Justice
minister, Tudorel Toader, is the one who notified the Constitutional Court
after Romania’s President, Klaus Iohannis, rejected as ungrounded his request
to sack the chief prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Agency. Toader considers
that the president’s refusal, motivated by the lack of political opportunity,
is meant to create an institutional blockage. In the president’s opinion,
however, this refusal is not the cause of an institutional blockage, but it is
the finalisation of a procedure and the act of exerting legal responsibilities
by the head of state. We recall the rejection of the revocation request came
after the Superior Council of Magistracy issued a negative opinion on the line
minister’s request, which is a consultative but mandatory opinion in this
procedure.
VISIT Romanian president
Klaus Iohannis will be paying a visit to Munich on Friday and Saturday in order
to receive the ‘Franz Josef Strauss 2018’ award from the prestigious foundation
‘Hanns Seidel’, the presidential administration announced on Wednesday. According
to the same sources the president has been awarded the prize for having
promoted in a constructive and visionary way along his entire political career
the democratic values of a united society and trust in the European project.
The ceremony is to be attended among others by the Bavarian Premier Markus
Soder and by Barbara Stamm, president of the Landtag of Bavaria. The
‘Franz Josef Strauss’ prize has been awarded since 1996 and among its
recipients there are the former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, the former US
president George H. W. Bush and the incumbent president of the European
Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.
AMBASSADOR Romania’s Prime Minister
Viorica Dancila on Wednesday received in Bucharest the extraordinary and
plenipotentiary ambassador of India HE Thanglura Darlong. On this occasion, the
Romanian official has highlighted the opportunities for stepping up the
political dialogue between the two countries, including at high level. Given
that in 2018 the two countries are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations
and 5 years since the signing of the Extended Partnership, the two officials
have also discussed ways of marking these events in the two countries.
PRINCE CHARLES
Romania’s President, Klaus Iohannis, was having talks in Bucharest on Wednesday
with the heir to the British Crown, HRH the Prince of Wales, the Presidential
Administration announced. Last year, HRH Prince Charles came to Romania several
times, both on private and official visits. In token of
appreciation for his activity in Romania and for promoting its image abroad, in
2017, Klaus Iohannnis awarded Prince Charles the Star of Romania National
Order in Rank of Grand Cross. For two decades, the Prince of Wales comes almost
every year to Romania, where he owns several properties. He also runs a
charity, which encourages the preservation of heritage, traditional agriculture
and sustainable development in Romania.
