It’s not often that Romania gets to host the single most important event in a specific area, but this year, at the end of May, Bucharest saw over 100 musicians and official delegates convene for the… Cannes? The Wimbledon? The Glastonbury? of contemporary music: the International Society for Contemporary Music’s World New Music Days.
Subtitled “Columna Infinita” (The Endless Column) after the famous sculpture by 20th-century Romanian art icon Constantin Brâncuși, celebrated this year, the event featured works in 14 categories ranging from symphony orchestra, string quartet, and choir to audio-video and electroacoustic compositions.
Diana Rotaru, the head of the Romanian section of the International Society for Contemporary Music, was kind enough to give us some more details about the festival.
