In the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 grass‑court tournament in Bad Homburg, Germany, Gabriela Ruse defeated Emma Navarro of the United States, 6–4, 6–2. With this win, the Romanian secured over 57,000 euros and 220 WTA points. In another quarterfinal, Czech player Karolina Muchova beat Denmark’s Clara Tauson, 1–6, 6–4, 6–4, after previously eliminating Irina Begu. On Friday, the semifinal will be Ruse vs. Muchova.
At the Under‑20 Women’s Handball World Championship in Jinzhong, China, Romania defeated Brazil 30–28 on Thursday. It was the second win for the Romanian team in Group C, after the victory against Canada. Teodora‑Lavinia Damian was Romania’s top scorer with 10 goals. In the other group match, Germany crushed Canada 46–11. Romania will play its final group match on Saturday, against Germany.
Romanian football clubs continue their summer training. In Austria, Universitatea Cluj will face Hungarian side Ujpest Budapest in a friendly match on Saturday. In their first training game, Romania’s vice‑champions lost 2–1 to Croatia’s Under‑19 selection. In Slovenia, Corvinul Hunedoara will meet Hungarian second‑league team Nagykanizsa on Sunday. On July 2, the team from Hunedoara will play against Slovenia’s vice‑champions, FC Koper.
Romania’s national rugby team is traveling this weekend to South America. The “Oaks” will take part in the first edition of the World Rugby Nations Cup. In the opening round, on April 4, Romania will face Chile in Santiago de Chile. On April 11, coach David Gérard’s team will meet Uruguay in Montevideo. The final match, on July 18, will also take place in Montevideo, against Samoa. For the Romanian players, this is a good opportunity to redeem themselves after last year’s South American tour, when they lost 40–16 to Chile and 70–8 to Uruguay. (EE)
