Independence Day. In the U.S., large-scale ceremonies were scheduled for Saturday to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, while messages from various corners of the world arrived in Washington. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier highlighted the close ties between Germany and the United States in a letter addressed to his American counterpart, Donald Trump. Romanian President Nicuşor Dan has also sent a message. In an editorial recently published on the website of a conservative American media outlet, Nicuşor Dan says that the United States’ legacy extends far beyond its own borders and is embedded in the history and aspirations of numerous nations that have looked to America as a source of inspiration and hope. For his part, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has conveyed in a message that the U.S. represents a symbol of freedom, democracy, and equal opportunity, and that Bucharest’s strategic partnership with that country directly contributes to Romania’s security and development.

Visit. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is paying a formal visit to Romania on Monday at the invitation of her counterpart, Oana Ţoiu. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest, the agenda will include strengthening bilateral relations, with a focus on economic and security cooperation, as well as an exchange of views on the main topics on the agenda for the meeting of the NATO foreign ministers, to be held as part of next week’s NATO Summit in Ankara. Acting Minister Ţoiu issued a message on Wednesday to mark Canada Day, stating that Romania greatly values its trusted partnership with Canada, built on shared democratic values, strong people-to-people ties, and close cooperation in promoting international security, prosperity, and stability.

Government. The parties in the former governing coalition in Bucharest have not yet managed to reach an agreement on forming a new government. The PSD wants to take over the government, either with a minority cabinet supported by an agreement with right-wing parties or through a new rotation system, on the condition that the Social Democrats be the first to appoint the prime minister. The PNL, however, is demanding guarantees that the political agreement, once signed, will be honored by the Social Democrats. Meanwhile, the UDMR is calling on the PSD, PNL, and USR to set aside their pride, end the political deadlock, and form a cabinet with full powers. On the other hand, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) has initiated procedures to suspend President Nicuşor Dan and hold early elections.

Fires. Southern France is facing several wildfires triggered by extreme heat and drought. Romanian firefighters deployed to France have been working under the coordination of local authorities, helping to limit the spread of the flames and protect homes in the threatened areas. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has announced that 8,700 hectares have already been burned, adding that the situation is very complicated and generally worsens in the evening. Fighting the fires is proving difficult due to strong winds. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Romanian citizens to avoid traveling to areas where fires are active or where there is an imminent risk of fires breaking out, to strictly follow the instructions of local authorities, and to continuously monitor official public information sources. In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Romanian citizens to consult real-time updates by visiting the website https://www.inforoute11.fr/. Additionally, Romanian citizens who are in danger or who spot a fire are advised to call the emergency numbers 112 or 18.

Employees. The number of public sector employees in Romania declined in the first few months of this year, according to data from the Ministry of Finance. In April, nearly 1,280,000 positions were filled in public institutions—more than 5,000 fewer than in January. The decline is even more pronounced compared to the same period last year, with 31,000 fewer government employees. Nearly two-thirds of the workforce is employed in the central government. The Ministry of Education has the most employees—nearly 294,000—followed by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defense, the latter being the only one to record a slight increase in the number of positions.

Olympiad. Romania’s national team won one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals at this year’s second edition of the International Cyber Security Olympiad, the National Directorate for Cyber Security announced in a press release. According to the cited source, the results confirm the high level of training among young Romanians in the field of cybersecurity and strengthen Romania’s position among countries with a tradition of training future specialists in this strategic sector. Participation in the International Cyber Security Olympiad was included for the first time this year in the Ministry of Education and Research’s calendar. Romania was represented by a team of four students: Răzvan Mihai Iacob, who won the gold medal; Vladimir Albu, who won the silver; and Ştefan Mihai Filimon and Alexandru Gabriel Stan, who each won a bronze medal.
