The Romanian
fencer Ana-Maria Popescu on Saturday won the Women’s Epee World Cup hosted by
the Estonian capital Tallinn. She defeated
Russia’s Violetta Kolobova in the final, 15:13. Two Chinese fencers finished
second and third, Yiwen Sun and Mingye Zhu. Of the other Romanian fencers in
the competition, Greta Veres occupied the highest position, 87th.
Romania ranked 11th in the team standings.




We move on to women’s handball. Two Romanian sides were in
action in the Champions League at the weekend. On Friday, the Romanian
champions SCM Ramnicu Valcea narrowly lost at home 21:20 in a dramatic match
against the Montenegrin side Buducnost Podgorita. After four rounds, SCM rank
third in Group C with 2 points. The French side Brest Bretagne are in the first
place with 8 points, followed by Buducnost with 6. The German side Bietigheim
are in the last position with 1 point.




In Group B, CSM Bucharest defeated the Polish side MKS Perla
Lublin 28:19. The match saw the return of the Romanian international player
Cristina Neagu, who played well, scoring four times. CSM lead in their group
with 7 points, followed by the Russian side Rostov-Don with 5 points, the
Danish side Team Esbjerg with 4 points and Perla Lublin with no points.




We end this roundup with news from domestic football. The 15th
leg of the First League championship was held at the weekend. On Friday,
Viitorul Constanta defeated Chindia Targoviste 3-nil at home. On Saturday, Gaz
Metan Medias drew 1-all against FC Hermannstadt at home; while CFR Cluj
defeated Academica Clinceni 3-nil, also at home. On Sunday, FC Botosani
defeated FC Voluntari 2-1 away; and FCSB defeated Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe on the National
Arena in Bucharest, 2-1. The last two leg matches are played on Monday: Astra
Giurgiu take on Poli Iasi and Universitatea Craiova face Dinamo Bucharest. CFr
Cluj are in the first place in the ranking with 30 points, followed by Viitorul
with 28.
