Romania pulled off an astounding 29-21 win
against Hungary in the second main group at the European Championship underway
in Sweden. The Romanian handballers put on a stellar performance, with a solid
defence and good offence. Two weeks ago, Romania lost 29-24 to Hungary in the
final game for the Carpati Trophy. The defeat reported in Cluj Napoca at the
time signalled a warning for the Spanish coach, Ambros Martin, who managed to
raise the morale of his team. On Sunday, Cristina Neagu and Eliza Buceschi
scored goal after goal, contributing to one of Romania’s best performances in
recent years.

Following Sunday’s win, Romania has good
reasons to hope for a qualification to the competition’s semi-finals. First
however, they will take on the Czech Republic on Tuesday. Norway tops the group
tables, followed by Romania and Denmark. The two best-ranked teams will advance
to the next phase. Returning to the match against Hungary, let us note that
supporting Romania in the stands were over 500 Romanians living in Sweden, as
well as a number of fans who came from Romania to encourage their team. We
thank all our fans! They were amazing, as always! They travelled thousands of
kilometres to support us, and they’ve always shown us their love, Eliza
Buceschi said after the game.

Prior to this year’s edition of the European
Championship, Romania won gold at the World Championships of 1962, silver in
1973 and 2005, and bronze in 2015. Romania also won bronze at the European
Championships of 2010. Judging by the results reported so far at the
Championships in Sweden, we notice an improvement in Romania’s performance from
one game to the next.
