A roundup of the weekend's major sporting events
Romania has two representatives in the quarter finals of the BC Women's Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro. In the round of 16 on Saturday, Claudia Nechita secured a 5-0 win against Mariana Basanet of Ukraine. Ranking sixth in the Tokyo Olympics, Nechita will be taking on Michaela Walsh of Ireland in the quarters on Tuesday. In the round of 16 of the 60 kilogram category Loredana Marin of Romania took revenge against German challenger Jenin Zeynab Heck. We recall the Romanian lost to Heck in Croatia in March. Marina has this time secured a clear five-point win and will be up against Donjeta Sadiku of Kosovo in the semifinals.
The WTA 250 tennis tournament, the most important annual competition of this kind hosted by Romania, ended in Cluj on Sunday with the victory of Russian challenger Ana Blinkova who outperformed Italian Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 3-6, 5-2.
Romania's women handballers Rapid Bucharest ended in a 30-all draw their away game against Montenegrin side Buducnost Podgorica in the Champions League group B. Marta Lopez Herrero and Sorina Grozav scored most of the goals for Rapid Bucharest, each 7. Hungarian side Győr ranks first in the group with 8 points. Rapid is second with the same number of points, but with a smaller goal average. On Sunday, in the sixth leg Rapid will be playing at home Norwegian side Storhamar.
CSM Bucharest remains unbeaten in the Champions League. On Sunday the Romanian vice-champions secured a 40-15 home win against Czech side Banik Most in a match in which Cristina Neagu scored most of the goals. CSM ranks second in the group with 9 points, like Bietigheim of Germany and on Saturday they will be playing Vipers Kristiansand of Norway in an away game.
In men's handball, Romania secured a 34-26 win against the national side of Ukraine, in the fourth group of the European Championships. Denis Grigoras was the best Romanian player with nine goals scored. Romania comes second in the group after Austria and is followed by Ukraine and the Faeroe islands. The first two sides in the preliminaries will qualify for the final tournament together with the best four sides on the third positions.
Last weekend saw the football matches counting towards the 14th leg of the Romanian Superleague. On Friday in Pitesti, local side FC Arges and FC Voluntari ended in a goaless draw their game, while in Medias, central Romania, Rapid Bucharest clinched a 2-0 win against Hermannstadt.
On Saturday, FC Botosani obtained a 1-0 win against FCU Craiova. In Ovidiu, southern Romania, local side Farul Constanta secured a 2-0 win against Universitatea Cluj. In the day's last game, Universitatea Craiova obtained a 2-1 home win against Petrolul Ploiești. In the first match on Sunday, Chindia Targoviste outperformed Mioveni 1-0 after which, in Bucharest FCSB defeated UTA Arad 2-0. Farul ranks first in the standings with 33 points followed by Rapid Bucharest with 28.
